Main Line furniture store owner sentenced to jail

MALVERN, Pa. (WPVI) -- Justice has been served on behalf of consumers who contacted the Action News Troubleshooters with claims that they had been bilked by the owner of a Main Line interior design and furniture company.

It comes after a years-long investigation.

A judge handed down a sentence of six to 23 months of prison time, plus 6 years' probation to Matt Kaplan of M. Kaplan Interiors.

It comes after Kaplan pleaded guilty in September to deceptive business practices, theft and bad checks.

The judge also ordered Kaplan to pay restitution to 37 victims in the case in the amount of $530,203.

It comes after multiple customers reached out to the Troubleshooters about M. Kaplan, run by husband-and-wife team, Matt and Margaret Kaplan, in Malvern, Chester County.

The customers told Action News they never received some or all of the furniture they paid for.

Lieutenant Tricia Doyle of East Whiteland Township police had been working the case and said after the Troubleshooters aired a story in 2023, about a dozen additional victims came forward.

"There wouldn't have been as many victims coming forward without Troubleshooters, that's for sure," she said.

The criminal complaint said the Kaplans had "no intention of delivering" furniture, and in some cases, "orders were never placed" with manufacturers.

Margaret Kaplan's case is still pending with the court.
